State Plates

What kind of games do you play when embarking on looooooong car rides?  Growing up, my mom always had something fun up her sleeve to keep us occupied for the many hours we spent on the road.  One of my favorites is the State Plates game.

We were about 30 mins on the road when I walkie talkie’d C that we should play the State Plates game.  He had never heard of it before and was doubtful that we would see very many on our trip east.  As each day and each mile passed, we got more and more into the game.  I mean really, what else is there to do in Nebraska besides stopping at the Cabela’s headquarters?

The result?  In 5 days and 2800 miles we spotted 39 states and 3 Canadian provinces.

  1. Oh this is fun… we used to do something similar on long car rides when I was little. In Germany, because it's such a small country comparatively speaking, license plate usually represent a city or larger metropolitan area… so we would “guess” what the abbreviations stood for… it was a fun pastime!
